# Governance

## Purpose

WebAthens exists to advance trust, interoperability, accountability, privacy, and human agency across people, organizations, AI systems, and connected devices.

## Current Stage

WebAthens is currently an early-stage initiative.

Governance is intentionally lightweight to encourage learning, experimentation, and collaboration.

## Stewardship

WebAthens is currently stewarded by its founding steward and early contributors.

Stewardship responsibilities include:

- Maintaining the mission and principles
- Managing core repositories and infrastructure
- Reviewing contributions
- Facilitating constructive discussion
- Supporting open participation
- Helping the community grow responsibly

Stewardship is intended to evolve alongside the community.

## Guiding Principles

Governance decisions should align with the WebAthens Founding Principles.

## Open Participation

Participation is open to individuals and organizations interested in advancing trusted collaboration.

Contributors may participate through:

- Discussions
- Issues
- Pull Requests
- Research
- Pilot projects
- Partnerships

Participation does not automatically confer governance authority.

## Decision-Making

### Consensus First

Whenever possible, decisions should be informed by open discussion and community feedback.

### Stewardship Responsibility

When decisions are required, stewards may act in support of the mission and principles.

### Transparency

Significant decisions should be documented publicly whenever practical.

## Evolution of Governance

Governance is expected to evolve.

Future structures may include:

- Community stewards
- Working groups
- Advisory councils
- Partner organizations
- Membership models

No specific future structure is predetermined.

## Governance Philosophy

The goal of governance is not centralized control.

The goal is to create the conditions where trusted collaboration and responsible innovation can flourish.
